Arbor Week was celebrated in the first week of September at Tyger Valley
College. Three monkey thorns, Acacia galpinii, were planted and poems
were recited and planted with the trees in memory of this day. National Arbor
Week serves to promote awareness for the need to plant and maintain indigenous
trees throughout South Africa. Every Arbor Week celebration highlights
two specific trees, one common and one rare species. This year’s Arbor Week,
from 1 – 7 September, highlighted the monkey thorn as common tree and the
tree fuchsia and round-leaved teak as rare trees.
