It is not often that a local residents’ association succeed in re-routing new Eskom power lines. The Magalies-Bronberg Property owners Association’s (MBPA) objections to the proposed route of the Mooiplaats power lines and substation have been accepted in their entirety and the route was changed to the benefit of local residents.

The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the proposed Mooiplaats 132 kV over head power line and substation is available for public review until 24 June. It is available electronically, at the following link: MEtRc2ZIQzN0NjljR0E9PQ.

You can view a hard copy at the Maxwell Waldorf School / Ubuntu centre, business crew office, entrance on the gravel Boschkop Road, from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. All comments received have been recorded in the Issues and Response Report, Section G6 of the DEIR. Individual comment sheets, faxes and e-mails are only included in the hard copy.

When you hear that this rerouting was achieved by an association with only 80 members, one can’t help wondering how the MBPA would be able to influence local government policies and agendas once they have more members.

According to Deborah Knowles, MBPA management committee member, the association urgently needs more members. She said that the MBPA committee is currently voicing strenuous objections to the new Tshwane property rates that will increase property rate substantially, with effect from July, if not modified.

The association is a public, nonpolitical, non-profit organisation established to represent and promote the interests of its members, and the smallholding property owners in particular, relating to sustainable and affordable municipal services and property rates, environmental issues, development of the area and other common interests.

MBPA members keep track of new property development announcements. They evaluate and comment on the applications, compiling objections to developments that negatively affect residents, propose alternatives and changes, meet with property developers or their agents to arrive at compromises and defend objections in public hearings.

The MBPA also comments on draft municipal IDP reports, budgets, spatial development plans, valuation roles and property rates. Members attend public meetings and serve on ward committees.
