In response to your article about the felled Jacaranda trees in the August issue, I am interested in obtaining from you, if possible, the names and contact details of anyone who may have responded.

When this incident happened I sent out an e-mail in the hope that I could obtain some legislation so that we could protect this from happening again by involving the police and prosecuting those who destroy council property that is of significant historical value.

Unfortunately there is no legislation to this effect but the one useful reply I did get was from Jan Boshoff of the DA who had been in touch with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries who stated that, in addition to information re the age, history, etc of the trees, I need to obtain public support (from a rate payers association or a heritage association) and go with that to the department in the local authority dealing with parks, and convince them that the trees should be protected.

I am hoping that I can put together a list of names, in addition to a letter from the Cullinan Residents Association, to substantiate my application for protection of the trees.

I am deeply perturbed that residents in Cullinan think that they may destroy these trees because “they aggravate my hay fever”, as one of the residents responsible responded when confronted in this regard.
